Alternian translator

The Alternian Alphabet refers to character sets used in Homestuck and Hiveswap to represent the Troll language. This Alternian translator translates the alphabets to Alternian alphabets.

This translator works based on custom fonts served from the internet (@font-face). When you copy and paste unless you have the font installed locally on your system, it won't look the same. You can use the image for sharing which will look the same regardless.

What Is Alternian?

Alternian is the language of the trolls in Homestuck, the massively influential webcomic by Andrew Hussie that ran from 2009 to 2016. The trolls hail from Alternia, a distant planet with a brutal, militaristic society governed by a complex caste system determined by blood colour. While trolls communicate in English throughout Homestuck (for accessibility), Alternian is implied to be their native language, with Alternian script appearing in the comic's visual design, interface elements, and background details.

The Alternian alphabet was designed by Hussie as a cipher script — each Alternian character corresponds to a letter of the English alphabet, making it a one-to-one substitution cipher rather than a phonetically independent writing system. This design choice reflects the practical nature of Homestuck's world-building: the script needed to be decipherable by readers, appear in intricate visual designs, and feel alien while remaining rooted in the familiar Latin alphabet. Fans have extensively documented and used the Alternian script.

Homestuck and Its Cultural Impact

Homestuck is one of the most ambitious and influential webcomics ever created. Beginning as a text-based adventure game parody, it evolved into a multimedia epic spanning over 800,000 words, thousands of pages of comics, animated sequences, and interactive games. At its peak in the early 2010s, Homestuck had an enormous online fandom — particularly on Tumblr — that produced vast quantities of fan art, fan fiction, cosplay, and analysis.

The troll characters — Karkat, Terezi, Vriska, Gamzee, and ten others — became iconic in fandom culture, each defined by a distinctive personality, blood colour, and individual quirk in their typing style. Vriska types with 8s replacing words containing the letter B; Gamzee types with ALTERNATING CAPS when sober, becoming all lowercase when not. These typing quirks became as recognisable as the characters themselves, and the Alternian script gave visual distinctiveness to the alien civilisation they came from.

The Troll Caste System and Blood Colours

Alternian society is hierarchically organised by blood colour, from lowest to highest:

Blood Colour Example Troll Position
BurgundyAradiaLowest caste
BronzeTavrosLand dweller
TealTereziMid-high caste
CeruleanVriskaHigh caste
VioletEridanSea dweller
FuchsiaFeferiHighest — Empress lineage

Cipher Scripts and Fan Engagement

The Alternian script belongs to a category of fictional alphabets designed primarily as cipher systems — substituting characters one-for-one with English letters. This design makes them accessible to fans who want to write in the script without learning a fully independent phonological system. Tolkien's Tengwar and Cirth were fully independent; Alternian, like the Avatar: The Last Airbender scripts and many other animated show alphabets, prioritises decodability and visual distinctiveness over linguistic independence.

These cipher scripts serve a powerful function in fan communities: they allow fans to create content — messages, artwork, cosplay props, merchandise — that is authentically in-universe while remaining readable with a simple key. The Alternian script appears in thousands of pieces of fan art and cosplay, extending the visual language of Homestuck's distinctive aesthetic far beyond the original comic.

How This Alternian Translator Works

This Alternian translator converts standard English text into the Alternian script from Homestuck — substituting each letter with its Alternian counterpart to produce text that looks as though it came from the trolls' home planet.

Perfect for Homestuck fans creating fan art, writing in-character messages, designing cosplay props, or simply exploring the visual language of Alternian trollkind. May your blood stay the colour it needs to be to stay alive.
