What Is Doge?

Doge is one of the most iconic internet memes of the 2010s — a photograph of a Shiba Inu dog with a knowing sideways glance, surrounded by multicoloured Comic Sans text expressing the dog's inner monologue in broken English phrases like "much wow", "very amaze", "so grammar", and simply "wow". The meme exploded in 2013 and has remained in continuous cultural circulation ever since — partly due to the rise of Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency that adopted the Shiba Inu as its mascot.

The original dog is Kabosu, a Shiba Inu owned by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato. The famous photo was posted to Sato's blog in 2010, spread to Reddit in 2012, and became one of the defining meme formats of the decade. Kabosu passed away in May 2024, prompting widespread tributes from the internet communities that had loved her for over a decade.

How Doge Language Works

Doge speak has a consistent — if deliberately broken — grammar built on a small set of key phrases that combine to express enthusiasm, incredulity, or affection about any subject. The structure typically involves a modifier + noun or adjective construction using a limited vocabulary of intensifiers:

  • much + noun: "much excite", "much language", "much translate"
  • very + adjective: "very wow", "very amaze", "very skill"
  • so + adjective: "so fast", "so grammar", "so internet"
  • such + noun: "such doge", "such word", "such fun"
  • wow — standalone, for pure emphasis and amazement

Sentences rarely include articles or standard verb conjugation. The effect is a breathless stream of enthusiasm — the internal monologue of a dog experiencing the world with pure, unfiltered delight at every single thing it encounters.

Doge and Dogecoin

In December 2013, software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created Dogecoin (DOGE) as a joke cryptocurrency inspired by the meme. Despite its satirical origins, Dogecoin grew into a genuine asset with a market cap reaching tens of billions of dollars during the 2021 crypto boom, partly fuelled by endorsements from Elon Musk, who frequently posted about it on social media. The Shiba Inu face remains Dogecoin's official mascot to this day.

Dogecoin's rise transformed the Doge meme from internet nostalgia into a living, financial phenomenon. In 2021 and beyond, "doge" became synonymous with crypto enthusiasm, meme investing, and online community culture in ways that no one — including its creators — anticipated when they first posted that sideways-glancing Shiba Inu. Such coin. Very crypto. Wow.
