Louis Braille was 15 when he developed the first version of his raised-dot system in 1824. Around the same time, Samuel Morse was still a painter who hadn't yet turned to the telegraph. Two 19th-century inventions — both turning letters into patterns — are still used today.

So which is easier to learn: Braille or Morse code?


Short Answer

For basic letter recognition by sight, both can be learned in days. For fluent use, Morse code (by ear) and Braille (by touch) each take months of practice. Most sighted learners find reading Morse on paper easiest at first, while fluent tactile Braille takes the longest to develop.

How Braille Works

Each character uses a cell of up to six raised dots in two columns:
