How Star Wars Created the Sound of Alien Languages
Chewbacca's roar is part bear. Jawas chatter in sped-up recordings of a real African language. R2-D2 is partly the voice of a man making baby sounds into a synthesizer. The alien languages of Star Wars weren't written — they were recorded.
Here's how sound designer Ben Burtt created the voices of a galaxy far, far away.
The Counterintuitive Truth: Real Sounds Make Aliens More Believable
You might expect alien voices to come from electronic effects. Burtt did the opposite: he started with real animals and real human languages.
Our brains recognise natural sound patterns even when we can't identify the source. That makes the result feel alive. We call this organic alienness: alien sounds built from real, living recordings.

Chewbacca and Shyriiwook
Burtt blended recordings of bears, plus walruses, lions, badgers, and other animals, to create Chewbacca's voice.
The trick was choosing animal sounds that carried emotion: sadness, anger, amusement. Audiences understand Chewie despite never learning a word.
R2-D2's Beeps
Burtt combined:
- His own voice, making baby-like sounds
- An ARP 2600 synthesizer
- Whistles and electronic effects
The human voice underneath the electronics is why R2-D2 feels like a character, not a machine.
Huttese
For Huttese, Burtt drew on recordings including Quechua, an Indigenous language of the Andes. He liked its rhythm and sounds.
Greedo's lines in A New Hope and Jabba's dialogue in Return of the Jedi gave Huttese its classic sound.
Jawaese
The Jawas' fast chatter was reportedly based on sped-up Zulu. Speeding up human speech makes it sound small, quick, and scurrying — perfect for the tiny scavengers.
Ewokese
For Return of the Jedi, Burtt used recordings including Tibetan and Nepali, among other languages, to create Ewok speech.
He wanted a language that sounded warm, communal, and slightly primitive — matching the forest-dwelling Ewoks.

The Ethics Debate
Borrowing real languages for alien voices has raised questions. Some viewers have recognised real words or languages in alien dialogue. Modern productions are more careful about using real languages in ways that might seem disrespectful or stereotypical.
That's part of why many newer productions hire conlangers to build original languages instead.
Later Star Wars Languages
- Mando'a was created by author Karen Traviss as a written language with grammar, not a sound design. (Mandalorian Translator)
