"Peace is a lie. There is only passion." The Sith Code is one of the darkest philosophies in Star Wars — and it hints at something deeper: the Sith weren't always just an order of dark side users. In Star Wars lore, they were once a species with their own language.

The Counterintuitive Truth: "Sith" Was Originally a Species
Most fans know the Sith as dark side Force users like Darth Vader and Darth Sidious. But in Star Wars Legends lore, the Sith were originally a red-skinned species on the planet Korriban. Exiled dark Jedi ruled them, and over time, "Sith" came to mean the dark side order.
That means the Sith language began as a real species' tongue before becoming a language of dark ritual. We call this ethnic-to-ideological drift: a people's name becoming the name of a belief system.
What Is the Sith Language?
In Legends material, the Sith language was spoken by the ancient Sith species and later used by Sith Lords for rituals, inscriptions, and holocrons. Only fragments appear in official sources.

The Sith Code
The best-known Sith text is the Sith Code:
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
It's a direct response to the Jedi Code, which begins "There is no emotion, there is peace."
What Does "Darth" Mean?
Darth is a title taken by Sith Lords. Its in-universe origin is described differently in various sources, but it's consistently a mark of Sith mastery.
George Lucas has said in interviews that the name "Darth Vader" evokes "dark father" — with Vader echoing the Dutch word vader (father). Whether or not that was planned from the start, it became one of cinema's most famous name puns.
Sith Names
Sith Lords take new names when they embrace the dark side:

The Rule of Two
The Sith follow the Rule of Two, established by Darth Bane: there should be only two Sith at a time — a master and an apprentice. Yoda summarises it in The Phantom Menace: "Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice."

On screen, Sith mostly speak Galactic Basic, but their voices are distinctive:
- Darth Vader: Deep, mechanical, controlled (voiced by James Earl Jones, with breathing by Ben Burtt)
- Darth Sidious: Raspy, persuasive, theatrical
- Darth Maul: Mostly silent — menace through presence
