What Is the Aqualish Language?

Aqualish is the native language of the Aqualish — an aquatic, spider-like species from the ocean world of Ando in the Outer Rim Territories of the Star Wars galaxy. It is the official language of Ando and was spoken across Aqualish-controlled systems. To human ears, Aqualish sounds strikingly like nerf bleats — a description used in the Star Wars expanded universe — owing to its characteristically harsh, guttural consonant clusters and resonant vowel sequences.

The language has three mutually intelligible dialects corresponding to the three Aqualish subspecies: Aquala (spoken by the most numerous, ocean-dwelling subspecies), Quara (wetland-dwellers with articulated hands), and Ualaq (the rarest, cave-dwelling subspecies). The dialectal differences are described as mere regionalisms — all three groups understand each other without difficulty. Structurally, Aqualish bears a kinship with Huttese and Rodese, and learning any one of the three is said to ease acquisition of the others.

Aqualish in Star Wars

Aqualish made its on-screen debut in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) when Ponda Baba — an Aquala-subspecies thug — confronts Luke Skywalker in Chalmun's Cantina on Mos Eisley. His line, "Negola dewaghi wooldugger?!?" — later translated as "Out of my way, human excrement!" — is the only fully attested Aqualish phrase in canon. The sound design for those guttural vocalisations was created using walrus recordings, giving the language its distinctive resonant, bellowing quality. The encounter ends badly for Ponda Baba when Obi-Wan Kenobi severs his arm with a lightsaber.

Aqualish reappears in Star Wars Rebels with arms dealer Amda Wabo, who speaks exclusively in Aqualish and requires a translator. Sabine Wren — a Mandalorian fluent in Aqualish — famously exploits a near-homophone in the language: the Aqualish words for "seven" and "seventeen" are so similar that even skilled amateur translators confuse them. Sabine deliberately mistranslates Wabo's "Bay 7" as "Bay 17", redirecting the heroes to the right location. It is a small but telling glimpse into Aqualish phonology: the language's numbers are morphologically close, distinguished by subtle tonal or suffix cues. Star Wars and all related characters are trademarks of Disney / Lucasfilm.

Common Aqualish Phrases

The canonical Aqualish vocabulary is small, but the attested phrase and the language's phonological character give us a foundation for its vocabulary. Here are key words and phrases used by this translator:

The Aqualish Species and Culture

The Aqualish are visually distinctive: large black eyes, a wide mouth ringed with tusk-like teeth, and a stocky, powerful body. Their hands vary by subspecies — the Aquala have flipper-like fins, while the Quara possess fully articulated webbed hands with opposable thumbs, making them more suited to operating technology. This physical difference has historically caused tension between the subspecies, with the Quara having more representation in Aqualish political institutions and off-world trade.

The Aqualish homeworld of Ando is largely covered in oceans, which shaped their evolution and culture. They were known as aggressive and territorial, traits reflected in their language's harsh phonology. Notable Aqualish figures in the Star Wars universe include Ponda Baba (the cantina brawler from A New Hope), Amda Wabo (arms dealer in Rebels), and Po Nudo — a Ualaq Aqualish who served as Senator of Ando and later joined Count Dooku's Separatist Council during the Clone Wars.

How This Aqualish Translator Works

This translator starts with the only fully documented Aqualish phrase in Star Wars canon — Negola dewaghi wooldugger — and uses its phonological fingerprint to construct a consistent vocabulary. The phrase reveals Aqualish's key traits: multi-syllabic words (ne-go-la, de-wa-ghi), tolerance for consonant clusters (wd-, -dg-), and long vowel sequences (woo-). These patterns, combined with the known walrus-inspired sound design, inform every generated word.

When you enter text, the translator first matches any known words or phrases from its vocabulary. Unrecognised English words are converted into Aqualish phonetics by assembling syllables drawn from the language's attested sound palette — guttural stops, nasal-velar clusters, -gh endings, and vowel sequences like oo, oa, and au. Occasional guttural bursts (the walrus-like bellows that defined Ponda Baba's screen presence) are woven in for atmosphere. The translation API is available for developers who want to integrate Aqualish into their own applications.
