Cuneiform vs. Hieroglyphics: What's the Difference?

Around 3200 BCE, two civilisations about 1,000 miles apart were developing writing at almost the same time. In Mesopotamia, scribes pressed wedges into clay. In Egypt, artists carved birds, eyes, and snakes into stone.

Cuneiform and hieroglyphics are the two oldest major writing systems. Here's how they compare.

Cuneiform is a Mesopotamian writing system made of wedge-shaped marks pressed into clay, used for many languages over about 3,000 years. Egyptian hieroglyphs are picture-based signs carved or painted on monuments and papyrus, used for the Egyptian language. Both mix signs for sounds and meanings, but they look and were used very differently.


The Counterintuitive Truth: Both Scripts Were Partly Phonetic

Many people think hieroglyphs are "picture writing" where each image means a word. In reality, many hieroglyphs represent sounds. The owl often stands for the sound m, not "owl."

Cuneiform works similarly: signs can represent syllables, words, or categories. We call this mixed-signal writing: scripts combining sound signs and meaning signs.

How Cuneiform Worked

  1. A scribe took a reed stylus with a triangular tip.
  2. Pressed it into wet clay, creating wedge-shaped marks.
  3. Combined wedges into signs.
  4. Let the tablet dry — or baked it for permanence.

Ironically, many tablets survived because libraries burned, baking the clay hard.

Early cuneiform began as pictures, but over time the signs became abstract wedges.

How Hieroglyphs Worked

Hieroglyphs combine three sign types:

  • Logograms — represent a word
  • Phonograms — represent sounds
  • Determinatives — silent signs clarifying meaning

Hieroglyphs could be written left-to-right, right-to-left, or vertically. Readers read toward the faces of people and animals.

Royal names were enclosed in an oval called a cartouche.

How to Read Babylonian Cuneiform (Basics)

  1. Learn sign values — each sign can have several readings.
  2. Identify determinatives — silent signs marking categories like gods or places.
  3. Know the language — Akkadian grammar is essential.
  4. Read left to right in horizontal lines.

It takes years of study, which is why fluent readers are rare.


How Ancient Egyptians Actually Wrote

Egyptians used more than one script:

  • Hieroglyphic — formal monuments
  • Hieratic — faster cursive for everyday documents
  • Demotic — an even more cursive script from around 650 BCE

Most daily writing was not in hieroglyphs. We call this formal-script illusion: assuming a civilisation wrote everything the way its monuments look.

Hieroglyphs

The Rosetta Stone (196 BCE), found in 1799, carries the same decree in hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek. Champollion used it to crack the system in 1822.

Cuneiform

The Behistun Inscription in Iran records a text in Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian. Henry Rawlinson copied it at great personal risk in the 1830s–40s, helping scholars decode Akkadian cuneiform.
