Can AI Invent a Better Fictional Language?

Ask an AI chatbot to invent an alien language and you'll get something impressive in seconds: sounds, grammar rules, a few hundred words, maybe a sample poem. Marc Okrand needed months to build the first version of Klingon. So has AI made human conlangers obsolete?

Not quite. AI is very good at part of the job and surprisingly bad at the part that makes languages memorable.


The Counterintuitive Truth: AI's Problem Is That It's Too Average

AI language models learn from huge amounts of human text. That makes them excellent at producing things that look typical. But the best fictional languages are memorable because they're atypical in specific, deliberate ways.

Klingon's object–verb–subject word order appears in only a tiny fraction of human languages. High Valyrian's four genders — lunar, solar, terrestrial, aquatic — reflect a specific fictional culture. An AI asked for "an alien language" tends to drift back toward common patterns. We call this statistical gravity: the pull toward the most likely answer, which is rarely the most interesting one.


What AI Does Well

AI tools are genuinely useful for conlanging tasks that are repetitive and rule-based:

  • Generating word lists that follow a sound system you define.
  • Applying sound-change rules across hundreds of words.
  • Checking consistency — spotting words that break your own rules.
  • Drafting example sentences to test grammar.
  • Formatting dictionaries and lesson materials.

For example, if you define "all words are CV syllables using p, t, k, m, n, a, i, u", an AI can instantly produce hundreds of valid words. That used to take hours with a spreadsheet.


What AI Struggles With

1. Deep Consistency Over Time

A real conlang has to stay consistent across thousands of sentences written over years. AI models can lose track of rules they "invented" earlier in a conversation, creating contradictions.

2. Invented History

Great conlangs have fake histories. David J. Peterson creates older forms of a language and evolves them forward, so irregular words have reasons. That kind of simulated history requires planning many steps ahead — something AI can assist with but rarely designs well on its own.

3. Cultural Meaning

Why does Klingon's greeting nuqneH mean "What do you want?" Because Klingons are blunt warriors. Why does Dothraki ask "Do you ride well?" Because horses are life. Those choices come from understanding a story and its themes. AI can imitate them, but it doesn't originate them with the same intent.

4. Actor-Friendliness

Fictional languages have to be spoken by actors under pressure. Paul Frommer designed Na'vi so its strange sounds were still learnable. AI doesn't hear how words feel in the mouth — a human conlanger does.


What Experts Say

David J. Peterson, creator of Dothraki and High Valyrian, has been publicly critical of AI replacing language creators, arguing that a conlang is an art form built on deliberate human choices. Many professional conlangers share that view, while acknowledging AI can help with busywork.

The Language Creation Society, which connects studios with professional conlangers, continues to advocate for hiring human language creators on film and TV projects.


A Thought Experiment: Design an Alien Language With AI

Imagine asking an AI: "Design an alien language for a species that communicates through color and sound."

A typical AI result might include:

  • A sound inventory with a few unusual consonants
  • Color words used as grammatical markers
  • A basic word order
  • 50–100 example words

That's a solid starting sketch. But a human designer would then ask harder questions:

  • Why does this species care about color?
  • Can they lie with color?
  • What happens when two colors conflict?
  • How do children learn it?

Those questions turn a sketch into a world. The AI draft is a scaffold language — a quick structure a human then builds a real language on top of.


Could AI Make a Better Language?

It depends on what "better" means:

Remember: the most beloved fictional languages aren't the most regular. Quenya is beloved partly because Tolkien kept changing it over 60 years, leaving layers of history. Minionese barely has grammar at all. Neither would score well on a technical checklist — both succeeded anyway.


How Fun Translators Fit In

Fun translators sit somewhere between rule-based systems and creative design. Some use carefully built rules and dictionaries, like the Yoda Translator, which reorders sentence structure. Others lean on word-swap rules, like the Pirate Speak Translator.

The goal isn't linguistic perfection — it's making a sentence feel right for a world. That "feel" still comes from humans who know and love the source material.


Where This Is Heading

AI won't replace conlangers, but it will change how they work. We predict that within five years most professional conlangers will use AI for dictionary maintenance and sound-change simulation, while keeping design decisions human. Meanwhile, a wave of hobbyists will create quick AI-assisted languages for games, tabletop campaigns, and fan fiction — and the best of them will still need a human to give the language a soul.
