The Thu'um Explained: What Are Shouts and How Do They Work?
In Skyrim, a single spoken word can knock a giant off a cliff, freeze an army, or pull a dragon out of the sky. That's the Thu'um — the Voice. It's the most famous magic system in The Elder Scrolls, and it's built entirely on language.
Here's how Shouts work in lore and in the game.
What Is the Thu'um?
The Thu'um (meaning "Voice" or "Shout") is the ability to speak words in Dovahzul, the dragon language, with enough power to reshape reality. Dragons use it naturally. Mortals must train for years — except the Dragonborn, who learns words by absorbing dragon souls.
The Counterintuitive Truth: For Dragons, Talking Is Fighting
Humans fight with weapons and talk with words. Dragons make no distinction. In Skyrim lore, a debate between dragons is literally a Shout battle.
We call this argument as combat: a culture where persuasion and violence are the same act. That's why dragons respect mortals who can Shout — they're capable of real conversation.
How Shouts Work
- Learn a Word of Power from a Word Wall.
- Unlock it by spending a dragon soul.
- Combine up to three words into one Shout.
- Wait for cooldown before shouting again.
Each additional word increases the Shout's power.

The Most Powerful Shouts
| Shout | Words | Meaning | Why It's Powerful |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unrelenting Force | Fus Ro Dah | Force, Balance, Push | The iconic knockback |
| Dragonrend | Joor Zah Frul | Mortal, Finite, Temporary | Forces dragons to land |
| Slow Time | Tiid Klo Ul | Time, Sand, Eternity | Slows the world |
| Become Ethereal | Feim Zii Gron | Fade, Spirit, Bind | Temporary invulnerability |
| Marked for Death | Krii Lun Aus | Kill, Leech, Suffer | Weakens enemies' armour |
| Storm Call | Strun Bah Qo | Storm, Wrath, Lightning | Summons lightning |
| Call Dragon | Od Ah Viing | Snow, Hunter, Wing | Summons Odahviing |
Notice Od Ah Viing is also the dragon Odahviing's name. In Dovahzul, a dragon's name is a Shout. We call this name as spell: identity and power expressed through the same words.
Who Can Use the Thu'um?
Dragons
Born with it. Dragons think and speak in Thu'um.
The Greybeards
Monks of High Hrothgar who follow the Way of the Voice, using the Thu'um only for meditation and worship. They speak rarely, because even their ordinary speech is dangerous.
The Dragonborn
A mortal with a dragon's soul who can learn words instantly by absorbing dragon souls.
Tongues and Warriors
Historical Nord warriors called Tongues used the Thu'um in battle. Ulfric Stormcloak used it to kill High King Torygg — a key event that starts Skyrim's civil war.
The Way of the Voice
The Greybeards teach that the Voice should be used for spiritual enlightenment, not war. Their leader Arngeir acts as spokesman, while their true master, Paarthurnax, is a dragon who turned against his own violent nature.
Paarthurnax's struggle shows the philosophy: dragons are born to dominate, and choosing peace is their hardest battle.
Language as Magic: Why It Works
The Thu'um draws on real-world myths:
- Norse tradition tells of runes and galdr (magical chants)
- Ancient Egyptian belief held that knowing a true name gave power
- Many cultures feature words of creation
Skyrim turns these ideas into mechanics. We call this incantation gameplay: magic that you perform by saying something.
Carve your own words in the runes that inspired it: Elder Futhark Runes.
Thu'um vs Regular Magic
| Thu'um | Spells | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Voice | Magicka |
| Learned from | Word Walls, dragon souls | Spell tomes |
| Cooldown | Yes | Mana cost |
| Cultural home | Nords, dragons | Mages' College |
Where the Thu'um Is Heading
The Thu'um is one of gaming's best examples of language-driven magic. We predict more games will build magic systems around real grammar — combining words, word order, and meaning — as voice recognition improves and players can literally speak spells aloud.
