Aldmeris translator

The Aldmeri Language, known as Aldmeris is one of Tamriel's oldest languages and is spoken by the Altmer in the fictional universe in Elder Scrolls line of games. It is structurally similar to Ehlnofex but more consistent in grammatical syntax and phonetic meaning. Most other languages, such as Dunmeri, Bosmeri, and Nedic, stem from the Aldmeri Language and the namesake of most places in Tamriel, including Tamriel itself, are based on Aldmeri words. Our Aldmeri translator translates English to Aldmeri.

What Is Aldmeris?

Aldmeris — also called the Aldmeri Language or Old Elvish — is the ancient proto-language from which all Elvish tongues in the Elder Scrolls universe descend. It was spoken by the Aldmer (the "Elder Folk" or "First Folk"), the ancestral Elven people who settled Tamriel in the mythological past and from whom all modern Elvish races — the Altmer, Dunmer, Bosmer, Falmer, Orsimer, and others — are descended. In linguistic terms, Aldmeris is to the Elvish languages of Tamriel what Proto-Indo-European is to the real-world languages of Europe and South Asia.

The Altmer (High Elves) of the Summerset Isles consider Aldmeris their direct ancestor language and still use Aldmeri vocabulary extensively in formal contexts, religious ceremony, and scholarship. The language is structurally similar to Ehlnofex — the language of the world's first beings — but more grammatically consistent. Aldmeris words form the etymological roots of most place names across Tamriel, including the continent's name itself. The Elder Scrolls is a registered trademark of Bethesda Softworks.

The Aldmer and the Merethic Era

The Aldmer arrived in Tamriel during the Merethic Era — the age before recorded history — migrating from the mysterious continent of Aldmeris (which shares its name with their language). As they spread across Tamriel and adapted to different environments and philosophies, the Aldmer diverged into the various Elvish races known in the Elder Scrolls games. The Altmer of Summerset retained the closest connection to the original Aldmeri culture and language, considering themselves the most "pure" descendants of the Aldmer.

The Aldmer's legacy is everywhere in Tamriel. The Psijic Order — the oldest monastic order on Tamriel — preserves Aldmeri scholarship and magical tradition. The Thalmor (the Aldmeri Dominion's ruling council) use Aldmeris in formal communications as a symbol of cultural supremacy. Ancient ruins across every province contain Aldmeri inscriptions that yield valuable lore to patient explorers.

Aldmeris in Elder Scrolls Lore

One of the most remarkable things about Aldmeris in the Elder Scrolls universe is how thoroughly Bethesda has embedded it into the world's naming conventions. Virtually every Elvish race name, province name, and significant geographic feature in Tamriel has Aldmeri roots — once you learn the basic morphology (Mer = Elf/people, Al/Alt = high, Dun = dark/changed, Bos = green/forest, and so on), the map of Tamriel becomes a vocabulary lesson in the ancient tongue.

The Altmeri Dominion's political ambitions — to restore Elven supremacy over Tamriel and ultimately to "unmake" the mortal world and return to the divine state of Anuiel — are expressed partly through their insistence on Aldmeris as a prestige language. For the Thalmor, speaking Aldmeris is not merely cultural preference but a political statement: Elves were here first, and Aldmeris is the language of rightful authority.
