What Is the Infernal Language?

Infernal is the language of devils in Dungeons & Dragons: the lawful, scheming fiends of the Nine Hells of Baator. Where demons speak the chaotic Abyssal, devils speak a tongue built for precision, a language of rank, obedience and above all contracts, where every word can bind a soul.

Mortals learn Infernal too. Tieflings, whose bloodlines carry a fiendish legacy, often speak it from birth, and warlocks who strike pacts with archdevils learn it to read the terms. Cultists, scholars and paladins who hunt fiends all have reason to understand it.

Infernal in the Nine Hells

The Nine Hells, also called Baator, are a strict hierarchy of nine layers ruled by Asmodeus. Devils, known in older lore as the baatezu, climb that hierarchy by collecting souls, and they do it through bargains. A devil rarely breaks the letter of a deal, but it will always look for a loophole, which is why their contracts are famously long and full of fine print.

The official books describe Infernal's sound and speakers but publish very little vocabulary. That leaves Dungeon Masters free to invent, so long as the words sound harsh, exact and a little menacing.

Using Infernal at the Table

A line of Infernal turns a negotiation with a devil into a memorable scene. Hand your players a contract written in Infernal, have a tiefling mutter a prayer to their patron, or carve a warning above the door of a cultist's shrine. A devil's favorite threat will sound the same every time your players hear it, which makes it all the more chilling.

How This Infernal Translator Works

Type your English text and the translator renders it in harsh, exacting Infernal, with words for souls, contracts, blood and fire straight from the language of the Hells. Like a devil's bargain, a word once spoken never changes: translate the same line twice and you get the same Infernal both times.

Switch Mode to Infernal contract to bind your text under the Law of Baator, with the common-tongue version and some suitably ominous fine print. Infernal is also available through the Fun Translations API. Skethar ka vashkar.
