Game of Thrones — the HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series — features some of the most linguistically sophisticated constructed languages in television history. Rather than using existing languages or generic fantasy-sounding gibberish, HBO commissioned professional linguist David J. Peterson of the Language Creation Society to develop fully functional languages for the series — languages with grammar, vocabulary, phonology, and the capacity to express new sentences never written in the source material.
The two primary languages Peterson developed — Dothraki and High Valyrian — have become landmarks of constructed language design. Dothraki is now spoken by more people as a second language than some natural languages. High Valyrian has developed an active learning community on Duolingo. These are not mere sound effects — they are fully realised linguistic systems that actors spent significant time learning to speak authentically. Game of Thrones and related elements are trademarks of HBO.
David J. Peterson became the world's most prominent constructed language designer through his work on Game of Thrones. After winning a competitive process run by the Language Creation Society, he expanded the fragments of Dothraki and Valyrian present in Martin's novels into complete languages — then continued creating languages for dozens of television and film productions, including Thor: The Dark World, Defiance, The 100, Star-Lord, and Dune: Part Two.
Peterson's approach to language creation is guided by naturalism — making constructed languages behave like natural human languages, with irregular forms, historical changes, and the kind of internal inconsistencies that real languages develop over centuries. His 2015 book The Art of Language Invention is considered the definitive guide to the field. He has created more than 60 languages for film and television, making him the most prolific language creator in entertainment history.
The major languages of the Game of Thrones universe and their speakers:
| Language | Speakers / Notes |
|---|---|
| Dothraki | Khal Drogo, the Dothraki people; fully developed by Peterson |
| High Valyrian | Daenerys's dragon commands; ancient prestige language |
| Low Valyrian | Dialect family spoken across the Free Cities |
| Astapori Valyrian | Slave city dialect; Daenerys uses it to trick the slavers |
| Skroth | White Walker language; made from ice sounds |
| Asshai'i | Shadow magic language; Melisandre's ritual tongue |
| Valyrian (House of Dragon) | Expanded in the prequel series |
| Common Tongue | Westeros standard language (represented as English) |
Language in Game of Thrones is never merely decoration — it is intimately tied to power and identity. Daenerys's mastery of multiple languages (Common Tongue, Dothraki, High Valyrian, Astapori Valyrian) is a key part of her character: she is a polyglot who uses linguistic skill to forge alliances, expose deceptions, and assert authority in unexpected moments. Her reveal that she understands Astapori Valyrian perfectly — allowing her to complete the betrayal of the slavers of Astapor — is one of the series' most satisfying scenes.
Similarly, House of the Dragon (2022–) has continued to use High Valyrian as a marker of Targaryen identity and dragon-bonding. The ability to speak Valyrian — especially to command dragons — is both a practical skill and a symbolic claim to Targaryen legitimacy. Language, in Westeros as in the real world, is power.
Our Game of Thrones language translators convert your English into Dothraki, High Valyrian, and other tongues of Westeros and Essos — using the documented vocabulary and grammar developed by David J. Peterson and expanded across the franchise.
