What Is High Valyrian?
High Valyrian is a constructed language created for the HBO series Game of Thrones and its spin-off House of the Dragon. It is the ancient prestige language of the Valyrian Freehold — a powerful empire that once dominated much of the known world before it was destroyed in the cataclysm known as the Doom of Valyria. By the time of Game of Thrones, High Valyrian is a dead language — used in formal, ceremonial, and scholarly contexts, much as Latin was used in medieval Europe.
Linguist David J. Peterson, who also created Dothraki, developed High Valyrian for HBO from the handful of words and phrases George R.R. Martin had included in his novels. Peterson built a language with a complete grammatical system, including a complex noun class system that distinguishes between lunar, solar, terrestrial, and aquatic nouns — a system unlike any found in natural human languages.
High Valyrian in Game of Thrones
High Valyrian appears throughout Game of Thrones in key dramatic moments. Daenerys Targaryen — who grew up in exile speaking Valyrian — uses it in some of the series' most powerful scenes, including her famous speech freeing the Unsullied army and her commands to her dragons. The word Dracarys (dragon fire) became one of the most recognisable single words in the series.
House of the Dragon (2022) expanded High Valyrian's role significantly, with the Targaryen family speaking it as a primary home language. Peterson returned to develop additional vocabulary and refine the language for the prequel series. Duolingo added a High Valyrian course in 2017, which has been completed by millions of learners worldwide, demonstrating the language's genuine cultural footprint. Valyrian and Its Daughter Languages
